Monte Rio Beach is the largest public beach on the lower Russian River and is ADA accessible. East of the Monte Rio Bridge and known locally as Big Rocky Beach, this is the location of the Independence weekend children’s games organized under the banner of Big Rocky Games. A lighted boat flotilla and fireworks follow for an old-fashioned family experience.
Enjoy the serenity of this part of the Russian River and rent a canoe, paddle board or kayak (see below for rates). This is a great place to learn water sports but it’s also challenging enough to attract the advanced paddler.
Our food concession stand is stocked with cold drinks, ice cream and lunchable items. Volleyball courts and horseshoe pits are free to any who wish to play. The parking lot is only open during the regular season and closes at 8pm. Built-in barbecue areas overlook the beauty and grandeur of the redwood covered hills across the river.
Monte Rio Beach, is open to the public Memorial weekend through the last weekend in September each year.
West of the Monte Rio Bridge is Sandy Beach. The upper parking lot gives access to this beach all year where those on foot can cut through the narrow paths leading down to the water. This small beach is popular for fly-fishing and the adjacent boat launch provides access to small fishing vessels. Angling has long been a popular sport on the Russian River and even today the area is famous for Steelhead trout.
Sandy Beach is our dog-friendly beach and leashes are required. We ask that you respect the use of the area and clean up after your pet.
Dutch Bill Beach is located across the river from Sandy Beach with access off of Main Street. It is a natural island in high water with Dutch Bill Creek to the south and the Russian River to the North. In the summer months it is a popular family beach for picnicking and fishing. There Is a Park and Ride lot half a block south of the Beach entrance on Main Street.
The remodel of the Monte Rio Community Center was completed late in 2007 and is unique among rental spaces in the Russian River area for many reasons. The Center has both a large and small meeting rooms situated between the landscaped patio and scenic views of the Russian River. The private outdoor patio allows for breakout space, lunchtime picnics or evening barbecues. A full commercial kitchen with adjacent service room is available for catered events or cooking demonstrations. Accessible parking is available adjacent to the Center with a large parking lot just downhill.
It’s a beautiful venue for so many types of events and has enjoyed increasing popularity over the past few years for weddings, birthdays and meetings.
The Monte Rio Community Center is within a few minutes walking distance from river access (fly-fishing and boat launch), live theater and first-run movies, shops, taverns, restaurants and riverfront lodging.
