Golden Girls Bingo for Intergenerational Culinary Program
September 14 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
You will be participating with your fellow players to raise money for the Russian River Senior Center’s Intergenerational Culinary program. Come to Bingo dressed in a costume related to our theme and participate in the costume contest for fabulous prizes!
The Russian River Senior Center recently completed a HUGE
new remodel of our commercial kitchen. The kitchen is beautiful and serves the needs of feeding seniors at our congregate meals with delicious fresh food. Our numbers of seniors dining went from around 5/day to 25/day. The meals are a low-cost donation of only $4, with no one turned away for lack of funds. For some seniors, these meals are the only ones they get that day. Many of our seniors are homeless and getting a hot meal from a smiling young person is very meaningful. We are also using the kitchen as an intergenerational program. This summer, youth were trained in culinary skills, interacting with seniors, serving, hosting and community gardening.
The youth get paid (from a grant through Sonoma County) while being in the program because we have found that many youth on the river need to help their families with rent, food, etc. This program is helping youth get real, transferable skills in a safe environment where they learn from and with seniors.
The seniors love having the young energy around and feel a sense of purpose knowing that they are helping our younger generation. The youth come from the lower Russian River area, are 16-24 years of age. Criteria for enrollment in the program: youth are/were in foster care, low income, youth with disabilities, pregnant or parenting, dropouts, etc. The youth will also cook some meals for the winter shelter that WCCS runs. The youth, once they graduate, have skills necessary to not only find a job, but find a job on the River where most of our open positions are in the food business.
Every Bingo features a menu of tasty dinner and dessert items, such as Pasta, Pork Sliders & Slaw, Burgers & Dogs, Nachos, Chips, Cake (thank you Safeway), Brownies, and a wide selection of soda and bottled water. The BINGO KITCHEN opens at 5:30 pm and closes during the 5th game.
